Why SERVE?

I have always believed that the hardest thing to earn

in life is someone’s trust and love. At the same time

these two things turn out to be the most beautiful

truths of our life. As a part of my school’s summer

program I served an old age home for two weeks and

I can never forget those magical days.

Somehow I feel to have a bond with those who don’t

have anyone to share their sorrows with and I find

myself obliged to help them. I remember how I used

to make an aged lady living there for the past five

years smile by calling her beautiful and wishing her

good morning everyday. If asked to give my personal

experience with community service, I would say that

it changed me completely. Serving the society not

only gives one a chance to touch others life but

his/her own too. The satisfaction derived from

serving someone without any personal benefits is

something truly magical and it really does make one a

kind and gentle human being.

In order to understand the real pain and empathize

with those who have struggled their entire life trying

to make the two ends meet, I find community service

imperative as it teaches us the worth of our life and

how kind God has been with us.

College is a place where we not only go to gain theoretical knowledge about subjects and study a well-defined curriculum. It is a place where we learn to become responsible human beings and fulfill our obligations towards the society. Life should not be comprehended as a checklist of acquisitions or a pursuit of happiness; rather life should be lived selflessly and compassionately. I found SERVE living-learning community a golden opportunity for myself to get to know people who want to contribute towards the society and it is a platform for students to become aware about social evils of the society and become one to combat them. I became a part of SERVE to live out Virginia Tech’s motto, Ut Prosim.

I believe that I will learn a lot from the members of SERVE and assimilate the importance of teamwork and leadership. Coming from a country of traditions and customs, I will be able to instill moral values in my fellow community members and will also look forward to learn their culture. I will be thankful if given a chance to serve and work with reputed organizations in order to nurture our society.

According to me, life is not a checklist of acquisitions, wherein specific targets and goals are set and an individual can settle down after achieving them. Unfortunately, the majority of us have forgotten one of main reasons for our existence, which is helping one another. Education is vital for every human being in order to lead a prosperous life but there are some things which we can’t achieve from high paying packages or prestigious school degrees. The question is not whether service to others is important or not but whether we are willing to provide selfless and unconditional support to others. It is very important to realize the fact that only service done without any personal benefit is a service worth doing. I believe that in life it is imperative to comprehend the need of standing up for one another and making meaningful contributions to society. Serving others selflessly not only makes us a better person but also helps us to reach a deeper understanding, receive what money can’t buy and make this world a beautiful place to live in.
